Short answer: lopping (cutting or pruning branches) is not the same as clearing a tree under Logan's published definitions. WhatsTheDamage lists pruning / trimming at about $200–$1,200 per tree in Brisbane (typical $450, Oct 2026). Use pruning when dead wood or canopy reduction will make the tree safe and keep the shade.
We refer pruning and lopping jobs to local arborists — we do not prune trees ourselves.
Prune or remove?
Prune when dead wood, storm-damaged limbs or canopy reduction will make the tree safe and keep the shade. Remove when the trunk is failed, the root plate has lifted, or the tree is dead/dying and cannot be made safe. A consulting arborist (typically AQF5) can provide a written report if a buyer, insurer or Council asks for one. If you searched for tree lopping and you actually need the tree gone, use the tree removal form and say so clearly.
Does pruning need approval?
Council's vegetation page distinguishes clearing (remove, cut down, ring-bark, push over, poison or destroy) from lopping branches. Severe cutting that is likely to kill the tree is treated as clearing. Overlay lots and covenants can still restrict what you do — check before major canopy reduction on native trees. See permits in Logan.

What to ask for on a lopping quote
- Target outcome: clear a roofline, reduce weight on a fork, remove dead wood only.
- Photos from the ground showing the canopy and nearby structures.
- Whether traffic or pedestrian control is needed on busy Logan roads.
- AQF Certificate III (or higher) and public-liability insurance.
How it works with us
- Tell us about the job: suburb, pruning / lopping, tree size, access and urgency. Photos help.
- We pass it to one independent local arborist or tree-service crew who services your area.
- If the job suits them, they inspect and quote — including whether Council or state approval is needed. The arborist who accepts the job confirms timing.
- You decide. The quote is free and any contract is directly with that business.
We pass requests to qualified local crews — any contract is between you and them. See our disclosure.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between lopping and clearing in Logan?
Council summarises Queensland legislation: clearing means removing, cutting down, ring-barking, pushing over, poisoning or destroying vegetation. Lopping means cutting or pruning branches, and does not include removing the trunk or cutting so severely that the tree is likely to die.
Is tree lopping the same as tree removal?
Not in Council's legal summary. In everyday Logan speech, "lopping" is often used for any cutting. Tell the arborist whether you want branches reduced or the tree removed entirely.
Can you shape a tree away from my roof?
A qualified arborist can often reduce or weight-reduce canopy away from a roof. Ask for that outcome on the quote request; poor "topping" can kill or destabilise a tree.
Do palm fronds count as lopping?
Removing dead fronds is usually maintenance pruning. Taking the whole palm out is removal — use the tree removal form for that.
